Oberndorf Mauser Type M 8x57 $4495
Very early Oberndorf Mauser Type M Pre-WWI factory sporting rifle in 8x57 made in 1914. Jon Speed on page 438 of his book Mauser Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles lists Type M serial number 78855 as one of the earliest Type M rifles. This one is serial numbered 365 numbers later. He also notes that "The Model M was not made in large numbers..." on page 157. On that same page he describes the top opening trapdoor buttplate as seen on this gun as "unusual". Most were Mauser logo bottom opening. This piece in 8x57 remains in all original factory condition with a standard round top action, double set triggers, lever release floorplate, steel forend tip, and trap steel buttplate. Bore is excellent. It remains in overall 80% condition.
Survival on these Pre-WWI specimens is low and this is an extremely early Type M making it a very desireable piece for the advanced Mauser collector. I'm sure it could tell some stories!
